Large scale physical model study on clay erosion with gras cover on primary coastal defence structures

Wave-structure interactions, loading, response 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2024/05/15 09:15:00 UTC - 2024/05/15 10:15:00 UTC
As part of the research programme on the strength of clay with grass cover on the upper slope of a dike, large scale physical model testing has been performed. These physical model tests where the first step within the programme. In the second step the CFD model OpenFoam has been used to broaden the range of application of the model results by varying different parameters that may influence the erosion rate. With all results, it was possible to derive formulas for failure probability calculations in the final step.
This paper will first focus on the physical model that was built in the Delta Flume of Deltares at model scale 1:1.

The SURVIWEC Project: An open-source experimental database for extreme loads on a moored cylinder under regular and focused waves

Wave-structure interactions, loading, response 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM (Europe/Amsterdam) 2024/05/15 09:15:00 UTC - 2024/05/15 10:15:00 UTC
This work introduces a novel open-source experimental database focused on the dynamic response of a moored floater under regular and focused waves. The database provides detailed information about the motion of a cylindrical body anchored with two distinct mooring configurations: one with four evenly distributed tension legs, and the other utilizing catenary connections made of steel chains. The significance of this database lies in three key aspects. Firstly, it leverages one of Europe's largest wave facilities for wave generation, allowing for the study of wave-structure interaction on a large scale (approx. 1:10 ratio), thus minimizing scale effects. Secondly, the database captures critical hydrodynamic loads, including slamming, overtopping induced by extreme waves, and snap loads in the mooring lines. Lastly, tests are conducted with meticulous consideration for subsequent analytical or numerical validations, starting with preliminary tests using regular waves followed by investigations under extreme conditions represented by focused waves.
